July 1, 2018.
Dawn broke over the milking yards Downunder as the roosters clucked and the hens crowed, for Amazon USA had indeed blocked shipments to Australia and everything was now topsy.
Then it all went quiet as an emu climbed atop a wombat for a peck at the shearer’s screen. Sure enough, the message from Mr. Bezos there didn’t make sense.
One: Why were we still able to read this website at all? Wasn’t Amazon Dot Com meant to be geoblocked to Australia?
And two: The message said that only non-digital orders were being blocked from America. Did this mean they’d then be charging Aussie sales tax after all but only on Kindle purchases?
So I ran an experiment. I placed an order on Amazon Dot Com for a Kindle book.
AND THEY CHARGED ME 10% GST!
I’ll try to get a comment on this from Amazon but it means one thing.
My last post was right. Amazon can collect GST without issue meaning there’s another reason for blocking non-digital items from shipping directly to Australia.
More than one person I’ve spoken to about this hopes Amazon will re-think its embargo as more dawns follow.
