A Tip When Using a Camera for Writing Inspiration

Zoom in NY 700The other day I wrote about using a camera as a writing tool. Well, here’s a design tip that’s worth sharing too:

When taking a picture, zoom it out.

Instinct is to capture the tight shot our mind’s eye “sees” but the experts are right when they say, a wide-frame offers enormous real estate in a creative sense. There’s also the chance of stumbling onto something totally missed in the original focus. Something that could just prove writing gold later.

Seems so obvious I could kick myself. So for now, I give you NY, NY, tight zoom.

PAPARAZZO: Look! <tight zoom> A G-string!
ME: Look! <zoom out> A whole resort.
